Course Description & Objectives
Course Description
ENGL 1113, or English Composition I, asks students to critically read, reflect upon, and compose writing in a variety of genres for different rhetorical purposes and audiences.
There are five curriculum units designated for this course which are established to begin and end throughout the period of a two-week to three-week time frame. These units consist of the following:
- Unit 1: Writing a Narrative
- Unit 2: Writing with Primary Research
- Unit 3: Analyzing Writing
- Unit 4: Evaluating Writing
- Unit 5: Professional Development
Course Learning Goals & Outcomes
By the end of English Composition I, students will be able to:
Unit 1: Writing a Narrative
- Unit Theme – Bridging the Divide Between Personal Identity and Academia
- Unit Goal 1: Students narrate an event or series of events in which they describe settings, utilize descriptive/sensory details, and suggest a main point to the narrative through such details.
- Unit Goal 2: Students draft, revise, and edit multiple drafts or writing in various genres to produce textual products that are rhetorically effective with respect to considerations such as organization, style, tone, grammar and mechanics, etc.
Unit 2: Writing with Primary Research
- Unit Theme - The Things We Carry: Experience, Culture, and Language
- Unit Goal: Students report information using primary research in which they shape their topics for a specific audience, define key terms, incorporate credible research accurately, and shape that information in ways that are rhetorically appropriate for their reading audiences with respect to tone, organization, style, etc.
Unit 3: Analyzing Writing
- Unit Theme – Navigating Rhetoric in Real Life
- Unit Goal: Students analyze a written or textual product and utilize evidence from that analysis to answer a specific inquiry question about that product using insights derived from the analysis.
Unit 4: Evaluate Writing
- Unit Theme - The Things We Carry: Experience, Culture, and Language (contd.)
- Unit Goal: Students evaluate a written or textual product to provide their audiences with relevant information about the subject of their evaluations.
Unit 5: Professional Development
- Unit Goal: Students will learn the common characteristics of a resume and cover letter. Students will brainstorm about their career goals and academic interests to promote career development strategies and tolls for college or university student populations.
